The Greenwich Village Folk Festival will host their Live 40th Anniversary Concert on Sunday, Oct. 4, beginning at 4 p.m. Co-presented by The Village Trip, an annual festival celebrating arts, activism, and community, this concert honors Greenwich Village’s long history of folk music culture.
In 1987, Rod MacDonald and Raymond Micek co-founded the Greenwich Village Folk Festival, which took place annually until 1994. In 2020, the festival returned for a series of online concerts. The success of these virtual concerts inspired the founders to create this special 40th anniversary event.
The concert on Oct. 4 will take place at Manhattan’s historic Great Hall at Cooper Union, where Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly both performed in the 1940s. Now, the festival continues to celebrate the legacy of these two iconic voices who helped to revive folk music worldwide.
Among the performers at this year’s anniversary concert is award-winning singer-songwriter Robin Batteau. Batteau’s extensive career has included writing songs for charities including World Hunger Year and Save the Whales; working on well-known jingles for advertising campaigns; and performing alongside legendary artists like Yo-Yo Ma and Bruce Springsteen.
Other featured performers at the 40th Anniversary Concert include Suzanne Vega, Noel Paul Stookey, Guy Davis, and co-founder Rod MacDonald. Tickets for the concert can be purchased at the festival’s website.
