It’s always a Ska Punk summer for Sublime fans. But, this time it’s different with Spin Magazine’s latest issue, placing Sublime front and center. To celebrate the release and the band’s recent album, Until the Sun Explodes, talent manager Scott Lipps brought fans together, Wednesday, July 22, at Manhattan’s recently established piano bar, The Silver Lining Lounge.
Situated off of the Moxy Hotel on Bowery, The Silver Lining Lounge often hosts renowned bands and musicians in a more intimate setting. The night clearly started out with a buzz. A mix of ticket-holders and press, chattering outside, anticipating what would be in store. With Spin Magazines strewn across the cluster of reserved tables, fans gathered closely, elaborate cocktails in hand.
Before Sublime made their appearance, indie-rock artist Sid Simons took the stage. Roots in both Australia and NYC, Simons’ lyricism blends his love of the two. Acoustic guitar in lap, Simons sang favorites such as “Wendy,” (written about a GPS) that merged into covers like “Ooh La La” by Rod Stewart. Simons concluded the act with his latest song, “Under my Skin.” Urging the audience to sing along as he broke into the chorus.
Shortly after, Sublime entered the room, joined by their Bassist technician. Lead-singer, Jakob Nowell, took his fathers place after his passing in the late 90s. Yet, Nowell hones in on the true, joyful nature of the band, cracking jokes with Lipps before every track. Even acoustic, Sublime connected with the audience effortlessly, capturing a range of sound through engaging vocals, bass, and lead guitar. Nowell teased listeners with covers of “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin and a brief intro of “Amber” by 311.
According to Scott Lipps, July 30th marks the 30th celebration of their Self-Titled album. This spurred the group to perform hits like, “Santeria” and “What I Got.” Before leading into “Until the Sun Explodes,” Jakob Nowell shared that the song came to him in a dream. In his lucid-like state, his father appeared, talking to him on the telephone. With the goal to honor his father and long-time Sublime fans, Until the Sun Explodes, feels authentically Sublime. Especially shining through tracks like “Ensenada,” Nowell went back to re-listen to old work written by his father, capturing his essence.
