Sophistafunk lights up UmamII’s Garden Party

New York cannabis growers from Wyoming, NY, UmamII, pronounced ooooo-mommy, took over the gorgeous La Luna event space in the High Falls district of Rochester for a unique garden party on May 14, a cannabis garden party.

With the smoke from the balcony blending seamlessly with the mist off the falls, it set the stage for a truly unique musical experience, one built on inclusion, community and a true love for your fellow people. With the mellow mood and pure enjoyment of the party favors the addition of some great music was about to set the vibe from chill to party led by The Medicinals, a Rochester local band, and quickly followed up with the musical talents of Sophistafunk, the garden party was underway.

With more of a casual gala feel inside things were loose, with local vendors from dispensaries and other affiliates to the cannabis culture here in Rochester in attendance, there were plenty of samples and good times to go around, equipped with a concentrate bar and pin vendors alike. Kind greetings and the meeting of new friends was commonplace as the food was complimentary, leaving nothing to want for except for maybe some good music, and it was time to fill that need.

With a makeshift area for a stage on the side of the venue, Rochester locals, The Medicinals, made up of Dylan Savage on guitar and vocals, Wil McKenna on bass and vocals, Lucius Snowden on the keys and samples, Alex Melville on drums and a second sample board, Luke Perry on trombone and vocals, Justin  Lloyd on trumpet and vocals, Anthony LaPenna on saxophone and vocals, last but not least, Rob Huff on percussion and vocals. With such a large setup and a diverse group of instruments, The Medicinals had a smooth reggae and rock sound that fit right in with the mood of the event, a chill and complete vibe filled the room with the melodic mix horns filled the nooks of La Luna, and the entire night seemed to be destined to be an excellent time, from people coming in small groups, to everyone intermingling to the sounds of this amazing band, their set ended far too soon. However, all good things must come to an end, and in their place Sophistafunk was preparing to take over the party.

Sophistafunk is no stranger to the Rochester music scene, coming out of Syracuse, or any music scene for that matter, as they mention on their site sophistafunkband.com they have a huge following in New England and the Roc City is no exception. With their unique blend of hip-hop lyrics, electronic structure and a funky attitude in general, it’s hard not to vibe out to this heavily talented band that has been featured on some amazing stages, including a set on Guy Fieri’s Guy’s Ultimate Game Night.

The entire venue danced and had a very intimate performance with the band as there were no gates or stages to separate them, it was one good time with great people, and the music played right until the end of the party, leaving the entire crowd realizing this was a special event that will hopefully become more prominent in the area.
