Rachel Bard’s Making Movies is a record that feels like a collection of cinematic snapshots from a life in motion. The album unfolds over 16 vignettes, each capturing a different feeling, memory, story, or artistic fascination.

New York is a constant presence throughout the album, influencing Bard’s songwriting throughout each snapshot. One memory from the Hungarian Pastry Shop in Morningside Heights inspired the track “Unspoken,” while a play from an acting class in the city led her to write “Pipes.”

“I wrote the people I’ve met, the chance encounters, and the walks around the city into these songs,” said Bard.

Rather than confining herself to one sound, Bard embraces experimentation and spontaneity. Sonically, Making Movies moves between full-band rock arrangements, acoustic reflections, and even improvisational instrumental piece on “Long Ride.”

Bard’s vocal timbre is deeply resonant invokes a nostalgia from 1960s art rock. That vintage feel is especially prominent in “Mad Bard,” a bluesey Beatle-esque track with a catchy, repetitive chorus. Bard’s musical fluidity creates a dynamic listening experience as the album takes listeners on a journey through different scenes.

Making Movies is an intimate, collaborative debut that finds meaning in everyday life, celebrating the people, experiences, and emotions that make every story worth telling.

Coming next for Bard, she has already shot videos for 14 album tracks, with a CD and lyric book in development. She also recently wrapped filming her own music driven independent short film in collaboration with Grand Street Motion Pictures and Revelator Records.

“Up next is hopefully more of everything. More artistic pursuits, more music, and more movies,” said Bard.

She will also be celebrating the release of Making Movies at Pete’s Candy Store on Saturday, October 17.
