Britian’s Jungle filled up the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on September 19 as part of their Sunshine World Tour. Josh Lloyd-Watson, Tom McFarland, and newer addition Lydia Kitto brought their infectious brand of 70’s coded, electronic, soulful funk to New York City, and the crowd brought it right back.
The crowd in Brooklyn was a real melting pot that night. People of all ages and backgrounds got together to forget about everything else that was happening outside and Jungle’s music offered a perfect escape. There was a vibe of pure joy in the air. It felt like as much a celebration as it was a concert.
They just released their 5th studio album, Sunshine, a little over a month prior. It’s a little bit more laid back then their previous work, but the new stuff really fleshed out the evening and gave their live show a new texture. The night was a good mix of old and new and the energy kept up for pretty much the whole show, minus a breather or two. It’s the kind of show where you have to go to the bathroom but you decide to wait for a song that you wouldn’t mind missing. All of a sudden it’s almost an hour later and you’re still waiting. Each of the three main players were given their moments to shine, and their sound was filled out with the help of a big backing band.
One of the more impressive parts of the evening was the incredibly gorgeous stage and lighting design. When I was shooting up close, it felt like I was stuck inside of a 70’s music video. The stage had this incredible glow the color of blood and honey. It was dramatic, it was symmetrical, it was extremely intentional. It was a fucking vibe. It was really nice to see so much thought and effort put into the production.
The high energy set featured loads of favorites, “Casio,” Problemz” and viral hit “Back on 74” kept the room pulsing throughout. The band seemed to really take it in before they started their encore, as the crowd light up the room with their cell phones. They mentioned the first time that they played New York City was at the Knitting Factory in 2014, so it was a very special night for them. Jungle continues the Sunshine World Tour US portion throughout October, they are headed south before heading west, before hitting Europe.
