Brooklyn witnessed a rare psychedelic event as King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard returned to New York to perform an electronic spectacle at Under the K on Sunday, Aug 23. With their five-person synth table, affectionately named Nathan leading the charge, the group formulated a full-sensory feast for the masses in the form of a fabled rave set.

The Melbourne band gained strong appeal across the states due to their genre bending albums, each with its own distinctive sound. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard‘s recent NYC run included 3 nights at Forest Hills Stadium, (Aug 20-22) and ended at Under the K Bridge (Aug 23). As dusk settled over Brooklyn, the band prepared to perform a rare live rave set with their 5 person synth table, also known as their “newest band member” Nathan.

The show opened with .VRIL setting the tone for the night. A German techno artist known for using live hardware in his sets. Droves of fans donned in bright colors, and alien glasses poured in as the beats lured them to the dance floor.

The crowd was buzzing in the moments before the show began. Before long the stage crew team begin loading Nathan onto the stage. When King Gizzard entered the crowd erupted into roars, screams, and all out partying. The band members gathered around Nathan, with its colorful exposed wires and buttons and began to play an extended version of “Set”.

The sky high screens at the back of the stage generated colorful psychedelic patterns and huge saturated beams of light pulsed across the crowd in rhythmic harmony. The group brought new life to several tracks, jamming and extending them well beyond their studio versions including several songs from their new album Alien Metal (released Aug. 14), as well as other fan favorites such as “Magma” and “The Grim Reaper”.

By the time the moon rose, thousands had gathered to dance, and witness the epic performance. Both the band and the crowd were boisterous. Fans were constantly crowd surfing, and band members jumping on speakers to get closer to the action at the rails. The show was a true display of love for electronic music, and for rave culture on both sides.

As the night came to a close, the band played “Head On/Pill” as paper airplane setlists were thrown into the crowd. The glowing group of fans poured out of the venue into the night with a smile stamped on every face leaving. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard has ended their U.S. tour, and can be seen next at Anita’s Theatre, in Thirroul, NSW on October 13.
