Bellissima Fleshgod Apocalypse at Buffalo Riverworks

Bellissima is not a term I usually use to describe death metal music but in this instance it is the only word I can think of to describe Fleshgod Apocalypse. Bellissima, because if death metal and the opera had a baby it would co-create Fleshgod Apocalypse. A pioneering Italian symphonic death metal band that coined the phrase “Opera Metal”.

On May 16, Fleshgod Apocalypse opened for Avatar at Buffalo Riverworks in Buffalo. The show is extremely theatrical with dramatic lighting. The costumes are reminiscent of baroque vampires and the set reminds me of places that go bump in the night. Donned with mounds of skulls and mic stands that are reminiscent of trophies resurrected of prey.

Consequently, the music is refined and hauntingly bel canto (beautiful singinging). It’s dark and intense; yet elegant and majestic. A wild juxtaposition of symphonic opera and death metal. Blending refined classical piano and soprano singing with chaotic rhythms and harsh growling. Creating a sound that is surprising and alluring.

Nonetheless, I highly recommend this concert if you love death metal and you want to experience something new! The only thing I can say is bravi Fleshgod Apocalypse. Bravi!

Setlist: Ode to Art (de’ Sepolcri), I Can Never Die, Minotaur (The Wrath of Poseidon), The Fool, Pendulum, Sugar, Epilogue, The Violation
