Theatrical Release of Greg Allman: The Music of My Soul

Subtext, along with Rolling Stone Films, has announced the domestic theatrical release of Greg Allman: The Music of My Soul. The release is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17th, and will include a week of exciting events in Los Angeles and New York, with exclusive screenings nationwide.

Greg Allman: The Music of My Soul is a visionary documentary that explores the life and music of the Allman Brothers band and offers a profound portrait of Greg Allman. The documentary traces Allman’s childhood, which was filled with profound tragedy and leading to hard-won redemption. Through archival recordings, candid interviews, and electric live performances, the documentary portrays an honest and raw reflection of the tragedies of Allman’s life, such as his father’s murder and the death of his brother and bandmate Duane, and eventually the triumphs and successes he achieved in music.

The documentary illustrates the extreme influence the Allman Brothers have in the Southern Rock and American music world. Many attribute the Allman Brothers as a shaper of American music culture, particularly with their musical roots in artistic freedom, collaboration, and defiance of convention. In addition, the audience is offered insight into how Greg and his band stood for racial equality, rejecting racial divisions that defined much of the American South and ensuring to ground their music in deep respect for Black musical traditions.

Michael Lehman commented on the film, stating, “I was Gregg’s friend. This movie is personal to me because I want the world to know the Gregg behind the music.”

Directed by James Keach, a Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning filmmaker, the film, no doubt, has the ability to capture the hearts of many and honestly share Gregg Allman’s Story. Keach is known for his roles in Walk the Line, an Academy Award-winning film, and other documentaries such as Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me, David Crosby: Remember My Name, and The Sound of My Voice.

Two premier events will take place before the film’s theatrical release. On June 9th, in New York City, at the Gramercy Theatre, a special screening will be shown along with an acoustic performance by Devon Allman and Duane Betts.

On June 11th, the second premier event will take place at the Grand Opera House in Macon, GA, with a screening and a special appearance by Chuck Leavell. Both premieres will feature a Q&A with members of the filmmaking team.
