New York Philharmonic Announces 2026–27 Season, Gustavo Dudamel’s Inaugural Year

The New York Philharmonic has announced its 2026–27 season, marking the beginning of a new era as internationally acclaimed conductor Gustavo Dudamel begins his tenure as the orchestra’s Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music & Artistic Director.

The season, sponsored by Leni and Peter May, represents Dudamel’s first as leader of the historic orchestra and signals a bold artistic vision centered on collaboration, innovation, and community engagement.

Dudamel, who previously served as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, brings a reputation for dynamic programming and a deep commitment to expanding the role of orchestras in civic life. His arrival in New York has been highly anticipated since the Philharmonic announced his appointment in 2023, and the 2026–27 season will serve as the official launch of his artistic partnership with the orchestra.

“As I begin this new chapter with the New York Philharmonic, I feel that every step of my life — as a student, as a teacher, as a musician, as a citizen — has led me to this moment,” Dudamel said in a statement. “This season is built on a single belief: that music, like this great city, can unite us across cultures, generations, and art forms, in a single, shared human experience. When we truly listen together, we can begin to imagine a better world.”

The season’s programming reflects that philosophy, bringing together repertoire that honors orchestral tradition while embracing contemporary voices and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Performances will take place at the orchestra’s home at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, with additional initiatives designed to deepen the Philharmonic’s engagement with communities across New York City.

Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States. Dudamel’s appointment marks a significant transition following the tenure of former music director Jaap van Zweden and positions the orchestra for a new chapter that blends global artistic leadership with the cultural energy of New York.
