Glom Mashes ’90s Alt-Rock With Shoegaze on “Below”

Glom (Sean Dunnevant) announced a spring North American headline tour in support of his new album Below, out now.

The run kicks off Tuesday, May 13 in Nashville and concludes Friday, June 6 in Washington, D.C., with a stop at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on Wednesday, June 4. Ahead of the headline dates, Glom opens for Dashboard Confessional on select April shows, including Tuesday, April 15 at Empire Live in Albany.

Glom released the additional single “One Track Mind” from Below, following previous singles “Late To The Party,” “Mirror,” “Steel” and “Window.” The album, a follow-up to 2020’s Merit, is the first music from Glom as a solo endeavor. KCRW described the sound as “mashing up a distinctly ’90s alt-rock sound with shoegaze sensibilities.”

Below pushes into heavy distortion and poppy dreamscapes, building out sounds current and classic all at once. The album resembles the crunchy, high-definition sounds of ’90s alternative rock like Third Eye Blind alongside melodic structures reminiscent of grunge-gazers Narrow Head and emo-adjacent things like Dazy.

Much of Below was written around the time Dunnevant turned 30, which he described as “a big milestone for people’s lives and careers.” He noted some people get married, start families and have stable careers figured out, while others don’t. He falls into the latter category, which is the struggle of being an artist.

The album finds Dunnevant engaging in serious reflection while moving forward with his sound. “My Body Loves Me” zeroes in on corporeal changes that come with aging, while “Window” focuses on missed connections and difficulties of repair. Dunnevant described the most powerful lyric on Below as call me when you’ve settled, let’s catch up and make a plan, I’ll pretend you understand and want to know.

Dunnevant reflected on the album after time passed, noting when he was writing it, he was down about his trajectory and didn’t know what to do with his life. He decided to take a gamble on the record, and it ended up exactly what he wanted it to sound like.
