Utica-based singer-songwriter J. Schnitt has released Use Your Collusion, his 24th album and first major full-band record in several years. Known locally for his prolific output and blend of folk, Americana, blues, and indie elements, Schnitt brings the Colluders into focus here, delivering eight songs that reflect both current events and personal reflection.

From the way it opens with “State of the Union,” the album sets a tone of observation and critique. The songs, in title and feel, regularly touch on social themes from the politics implied in “American Jesus” to the reflective narrative in “The Day Before the Flood.” Throughout the record, the band keeps arrangements fairly direct: acoustic guitar and piano form the backbone, while electric elements and harmonies from Abby Klausner add warmth and depth.
Musically, Schnitt hasn’t abandoned the folk roots that have marked much of his solo work. There’s a down-to-earth quality in the vocals and instrumentation that feels familiar to longtime listeners. But with the Colluders, there’s more groove and dynamic push; tracks like “When It Happens Again” and “Good Guys and Bad Guys” show the band locked in and working as a unit. The mix keeps things clear, letting individual contributions (organ, harmonica, slide guitar) enhance the story without overwhelming it.
Lyrically, Use Your Collusion is reflective and at times pointed. Schnitt’s writing leans into the role of the songwriter as observer, questioning where we are as a nation and how we relate to one another. The record doesn’t offer easy answers, but it does frame its topics with a sincerity that rewards repeated listening. It’s that thoughtful approach that makes the album more than a collection of tunes; it feels like a snapshot of an artist wrestling with the moment.
For fans who’ve followed Schnitt since earlier releases, Use Your Collusion confirms his continued curiosity and commitment to telling stories through song. It’s accessible yet thoughtful, blending stitched-together influences into a cohesive set that feels both grounded and timely.
