Slick Rick Celebrates Annual Birthday Bash at Brooklyn Bowl

New York based rapper Slick Rick performed at Brooklyn Bowl on Friday, January 9th to celebrate his annual birthday bash. Ricky Walters is a Grammy nominated, British-American rapper known as one of the most successful in music history as Hip-Hop’s greatest storyteller.

Opening the night of rhythm, royalty and victory were Neil Jackson and DJ Stretch Armstrong who ramped up the crowds energy. The crowd was wide-ranging in age and had the floor packed to the back well before Slick Rick entered the stage. When Rick emerged he walked up in style. He commented, “My wife says this fit makes me look younger.”

Rick took fans on a ride from the past to his present day music. Slick Rick began the show revisiting the 80’s with breakout hits “The Show”/ “La Di Da Di” (1985) with Doug E. Fresh, becoming one of Hip-Hop’s most sampled songs. His first debut album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick in 1988 with iconic singles such as “Children’s Story”, “Teenage Love”, and “Hey Young World.” These tracks and distinctive characteristics like storytelling, humor, and lyrical flow established him as the legendary Hip-Hop artist he’s known for today.

Throughout the show Slick Rick projected old music videos and asked the audience to watch in remembrance of his younger days. Reminding the fans his journey through music. Rick’s vivid narratives, stylish flair and distinctive eye patch have always made him an icon and Hip-Hop phenomenon. For fans who have grown up with him, it was as if they were reliving their youth through his music. As for the younger crowd, it was impactful and sure felt like we were back in the 80’s. After all, the annual birthday bash put on quite the show to continue his legacy, influence and honor one of the greats.
