Funk into Flight: Pigeons Soar at The Capitol Theatre

Friday, December 19 at the historic Capitol Theatre turned into a full-on celebration of groove and improvisation as Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong headlined with support from jam-fusion favorites Spafford. The sold-out crowd packed the iconic venue, eager for funky rhythms, extended jams, and high-energy interplay between two of the most vibrant acts in the modern jam scene.

Spafford kicked things off with a spirited set that showcased their signature blend of improvisational exploration and tight musical cohesion. A special show for jam band veterans Spafford, as it was their debut at the legendary Capitol Theatre. Fans on social platforms noted the band’s ferocious energy and ability to weave through genres fluidly, making their set feel like a musical journey more than a simple opener. Drawing on momentum from a strong fall tour run, Spafford’s performance was a perfect primer—crowd-pleasing, adventurous, and brimming with raw musicianship.

When Pigeons Playing Ping-Pong took the stage, the vibe shifted into full party mode. The band’s psychedelic funk and relentless groove were immediately apparent, with the Flock responding enthusiastically to every burst of rhythm. From deep jams to well-chosen covers that had the crowd moving and singing along, the night became a showcase of the band’s evolution—tight, confident, and deeply connected to their audience. Social media posts from the venue and attendees alike described a “blast of funk” and a “weekend to remember,” capturing the communal joy of the performance.

Highlights included extended rhythmic sections and moments where the energy seemed to lift the entire theatre, uniting fans and performers alike. The collaborative spirit between the headliner and opener lent the evening an extra spark, underlining why both bands continue to draw passionate crowds wherever they tour.
