The inaugural concert of the Proctors Passport Series on December 5 featured the Quebecois quintet Melisande. This was also the inaugural concert of the band in the 518. The group is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of Quebecois music.
Melisande have researched the countryside, interviewed musicians in small towns and villages and researched libraries for this music. The music expresses the day to day life in Quebec, from songs about family, relationships, drinking wine (lots), eating food (lots) and birds.

The interpretation is not necessarily traditional. The vivacious energetic lead singer Gabrielle was costumed in a 60s green minidress and golden boots danced up a storm and on occasion, played mandolin and jaw harp. Her husband Alexandre de Grosbois played flute and electric bass. Jean DesRochers on acoustic guitar, Gabriel Girouard on violin and Eric Breton on all kinds of percussion.
They brought their life affirming music of their home to spread its warmth on a chilly December night.
No they did not bring the cold weather from Quebec. It was actually warmer in Quebec the night of the concert.
Follow Melisande on social media and melisandemusic.com. The Passport Series will resume in 2026 at both the GE Theater and UPH. See social media and proctorscollaborative.org/passport-series for dates and times.
Thank you to the all the staff/volunteers at Proctors Collaborative and Mona Golub /Music Haven for bringing this series to the area.
