On Friday, December 5, Brooklyn Paramount and a sold out crowd welcomed The Beths for one of the last shows of their tour in support of their new album, Straight Line Was a Lie.

As their extensive tour neared its end, The Beths delivered a nearly 20 song set to the sold out Brooklyn crowd on Friday night. Originating in Auckland, New Zealand, the band has been a standout in the indie scene since 2014, blending bright jangle-pop with the punch of garage rock. With Elizabeth Stokes on lead vocals and guitar, Jonathan Pearce on lead guitar, Benjamin Sinclair on bass, and Tristan Deck on drums
As temperatures outside the venue were starting to near freezing, Friday night’s sold out show was the perfect way for the crowd to stay warm and entertained. At 7PM, Phoebe Rings opened the show with a half hour set. Also hailing from New Zealand, the band consists of Crystal Choi on lead vocals and synths, Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent on guitar, Benjamin Locke on bass, and Alex Freer on drums. The band has a dreamy, city-pop infused sound that at times hints at new wave, evoking a quirky charm. With their new album, Aseurai, being released earlier this year, the band delivered an engaging set to start the night.

Next to take the stage were Illuminati Hotties at 7:45. With their mix of punky indie rock, the band delivered an energetic 45 minute set that got the already warmed up crowd even more ready for The Beths. Started in Los Angeles, the band was originally a project created by singer and guitarist Sarah Tudzin. With their matching outfits, the band performed a very energetic set that featured lots of crowd engagement, which the audience loved. Amid the many Beths fans, there were quite a few Illuminati Hotties T-shirts throughout the crowd.

At 9PM, The Beths kicked off their set with the title track off their new album. Their nearly 20 song setlist featured nine of the ten tracks from the record, and despite its release just this past August, much of the audience was already singing along to the new material. The band also included older favorites like “Little Death” and even threw in a festive twist with a cover of the holiday classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, keeping it seasonal.

The band continues their tour till December 9, concluding at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. For tickets and more information, visit thebeths.com.
