A piece of music history is set to be auctioned as Music to Life will open bidding on Peter Yarrow’s hand-drawn lyrics to “Puff the Magic Dragon,” one of the most beloved songs in American folk music, starting on December 1.
The auction is part of Pass the Mic, Music to Life’s third annual benefit and storytelling event, hosted by Noel Paul Stookey (of the legendary trio Peter, Paul & Mary) and his daughter, Music to Life co-founder Liz Stookey Sunde. This year’s event honors the enduring legacy of the trio that continues to shape the nonprofit’s work.
The hand drawn lyrics holds profound significance to the legacy of Peter, Paul, and Mary, particularly with Peter Yarrow’s passing earlier this year. The handwritten lyrics capture the spirit of the trio and their commitment to activism, and stand as a timeless piece of memorabilia reflecting their shared hope for a better world.
Peter offered the lyric sheet to Noel Paul’s daughter in 1997 as a keepsake and a symbol of his support for the next generation of social change musicians. Liz Stookey Sunde remarks, “Upon his passing, and with the blessing of his two children, I believe Peter would want me to now pass along this work of art and such that the proceeds underwrite the work of Music to Life’s visionary artists.”

Peter was the wise, creative, funny and spontaneous musical brother I never had as an only child. He taught me, among so many other things, to live in the moment and said that the memories will take care of themselves.

The Pass the Mic auction will be open from December 1st to December 11th. Proceeds from the auction support Music to Life, a national nonprofit that carries the spirit of musical activism into today’s world, equipping socially conscious musicians with tools, training, and mentorship to drive positive change in their communities.
