Ananya’s Bittersweet Love Song To The Big Apple, “My Darling NY”

Ananya’s new single, “My Darling NY” is a love song written for the Big Apple. The tune is a sad, hopeful, and yet bittersweet poem to the city that looks to have felt like a toxic relationship. Produced to sound simplistic and intimate.

If you like Lana Del Ray, Billie Eilish, or Lorde then you will like Ananya. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Ananya, is an indie-pop singer who weaves her poetry into emotional singles. Her lyrics are heavily based around the topic of mental health and her sound is easily adaptable to the twenty something crowd that are looking to connect to their feelings.

“My Darling NY”

The song, “My Darling NY” is a sad and somber song lyrically. Utilizing anthropomorphism, Ananya depicts New York City as a toxic relationship. Leaving her feeling vulnerable to her insecurities, chewed up and questioning herself. Potentially crying on the bathroom floor with her makeup running. I personally enjoy the use of anthropomorphism in this context and have done so myself in the past. Cities themselves have their own souls but I like to think that they reflect back onto you what you are.

The song in essence is very simple, and gives off an intimate feeling. Like she is sitting beside me and speaking directly to me about her journey in the Big City. One of pain and pleasure and giving space to sitting in between the two spaces.

Video album review in real time by Bethany Couture

Overall, lyrically it is a raw and powerful song that many young fans will love and adore. Specifically young females who live inside heartache. For me, I would have liked the song to feel even more unboxed, and less produced. Giving a raw edge to the instrumental component and allowing there to be a deeper sense of emotion. The sweetness in the instrumental portion didn’t exactly fit the lyrics and kinda felt repetitive, however, could this song still gain popularity? Yes! It could definitely gain speed in commercials, movies, television and in the hearts of little girls.
