Nothing beats a show that knows how to get a crowd moving. A melding of catchy lyrics, ground-sweeping instrumentals, energetic performers and intricate lighting. By now, it’s really no secret that Cage The Elephant has the ability to do just that. Wrapping up the last leg of their Neon Pill tour, the group put on a whirlwind of a set this past Tuesday, October 28th, at Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre.

The Capitol’s back-to-back, sold-out dates, had fans showing up early, staking their claim at barricade. Alternative rock band, Common People started off the night. Now based out of California, this five-piece group thrive on the notion that their sound is limitless. A mixture of the unexpected, similar to a chemistry lab. With only two songs on streaming, their captivating live set took the crowd by surprise.

Shortly after, the emo-folk duo, Hey, Nothing followed in Common People’s footsteps. Having a knack for blending a complexity of emotions with wit and acoustic guitar, the audience became easily transfixed. Members Tyler and Harlow wove through tales of grief, fear and anxiety, while focusing on crowd participation.

Finally, around 9pm, the house lights began to dim. Fans buzzed with excitement, counting down the seconds for Cage The Elephant to appear. Quickly contrasted by a rapid succession of drum beats, a low, almost eerie, hum overtook the venue. The band poured on stage, lead singer Matt Shultz in tow, already belting out the lyrics to “Broken Boy.”

Notorious for vaulting himself over the mic stand, Matt Shultz’s presence held the venue’s attention instantaneously. Schultz was backed by his brother, Brad Schultz (guitar), Daniel Tichenor (bass), Nick Brockrath (guitar), Jared Champion (drums) and Matthan Minster (keyboard/vocals). Following up with “Cry Baby” and “Spiderhead,” the group worked in complete harmony to draw up the room’s energy.

Explosive sound on display, the show was a non-stop frenzy. Cage The Elephant’s sound spanned their entire discography. Including favorites such as, “Mess Around,” “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” and “Sabertooth Tiger.” At this point, the group was ultimately magnetic, listeners unable to tear their eyes from the stage.

Cage The Elephant closed out the electrifying night with 4 encore songs. Brad Shultz teased the intro to “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, before launching into “Cigarette Daydreams.” Matt continued to dance across the stage’s edge, raising his arms up in encouragement for everyone to sing along. Fans waved their phone flash-light about in time to the lyrics, “You can drive all night…Looking for the answers in the pouring rain.”
