moe. Nod to No Kings Protest with Themed Setlist

moe., in solidarity with more than 5 million Americans who marched and protested on Saturday, October 18 – billed as “No Kings Day” – performed a setlist that echoed the call to action of the day.

On Saturday night at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, WI, moe.’s first set spelled out ‘F TRUMP’ while the second set spelled out ‘NO KINGS’.

The setlist was written by drummer Vinnie Amico, who spoke with NYS Music that the sets were well executed, and while from the stage it may be hard to tell how many people got it, the overall feeling was that people liked the show.

Online in the moe.rons Facebook group and on the moe. subreddit, reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with fans cheering on the band’s choice of message, as well as the songs performed in the setlist.

Western_Algae on Reddit said “I actually appreciate exactly the point where they’ve kept their use of the stage for political involvement: blatantly obvious but restrained and relatively subliminal. Tongue in cheek, but with eyes obviously giving it away, in other words. It’s classy and professional, while also conveying their feelings. On brand, IMO, for this wonderful band of gentleman rockers.”

As for the encore of Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar,” moe. takes part in the Rock the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness, and for this past weekend, the encore has featured a song referencing ‘pink’ by name or song title. The night prior, John Mellencamp’s seminal “Little Pink Houses” was the encore song, and on Sunday evening, Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac” was played late in the second set.

But a double meaning in the penultimate lyrics of “Have a Cigar” offer additional connection to the protests of the day: “It’s a hell of a start, it could be made into a monster / If we all pull together as a team.”

And while moe. does use their setlist to spell out a message to fans, earlier this month, the message was directed at Bills fans.
