“Broadway, Bars, and Fortune” Highlights Theater’s Impact on NYC’s Formerly Incarcerated

Broadway, Bars, and Fortune is a new 40-minute documentary from director Shuvendu Sen about the unmistakable power of theater and the arts in rehabilitating formerly incarcerated individuals in New York City.

The film centers on NYC’s The Fortune Society, one of the nation’s leading reentry organizations, as they use theater to change the lives of those recently incarcerated. David Rothenberg, the founder of The Fortune Society and well-known Broadway producer is highlighted in the documentary, as well as 4 inmates-turned-actors—Philip Hall, Casimiro Torres, Ervin Hunt and Vilma Ortiz Donovan—who all offer their honest and inspiring stories of hardship, transformation, and reintegration into our world post-incarceration.

Broadway, Bars, and Fortune also features appearances from Tony Award-winning actress Christine Ebersole, esteemed actress and director Marcia Jean Kurtz, and Eric Krebs, founder of several NYC theaters. These three complement the documentary with their insightful context and guidance on the arts’ capacities to transform.

“Broadway has become an emotional point of rehabilitation… This film shows how theater, both inside and outside prison walls, can serve as a powerful healing tool—one that reduces trauma, crime and recidivism.”
