Picture this: red hued lights hitting the underside of treetops, smoky shadows circling centerstage and bodies pressed together, swaying to the lull of heavy instrumentals and dreamy lyricism. Maria Somerville’s performance at The Ruins this past Thursday, September 25th was exactly that. Situated in the backyard of Queen’s Knockdown Center, The Ruins highlights experimental and avant-Garde artists. Providing the space for fans to gather under the stars and listen to music deep into the night.

Barely visible through the thick haze, Somerville draws upon the lush nature and scenery of West Ireland’s landscape. Think rugged coastlines, rolling hills and staggering cliffs. She tackles the melding between reality and the mythic world, evoking a dream-like state upon listeners. Somerville interweaves dream pop, shoe-gaze, R&B and experimental beats together with rich and thought-provoking lyricism.

At The Ruins, fans gathered close to the front of the stage. Eyes closed, simply basking in the music surrounding them. It was almost haunting beneath the moonlit sky. The air was heavy, buzzing with energy from the smog and ambient instrumentals. A canopy of trees backed the venue, drawing back to Somerville’s connection to the naturalistic world.

Maria Somerville is currently on tour for her most recent album, Luster. A sorrowful, free-flowing romance, paired with fuzzed out guitar and steady bass. She stitches together aspects of her homeland, holding the power to transport listeners into a dream-like state. Her popular tracks include, “Spring” and “Garden.”
Somerville’s tour continues in Canada and Europe, stopping in Barcelona, Turin, Paris and more.
