Hearing Aide: The Naya Rockers School The World With ‘Higher Education’

Higher Education, the 10-track benefit LP from The Naya Rockers, is a master class in purposeful music. More than just an album, this project is a powerful statement, with all proceeds supporting the Alpha School of Music in Kingston, Jamaica. This philanthropic mission, tied to an institution that shaped the history of reggae, gives the album a moral weight that sets it apart.

The album’s foundation is the exceptional 10-piece Naya Rockers band, led by producer/drummer Nathan Sabanayagam and co-producer/bassist Nate Edgar. Their core sound is pure, authentic reggae. The recording process itself reflects the album’s global reach, with instrumental tracks recorded at Floki Studios in Iceland and mixing completed at Bob Marley’s iconic Tuff Gong Studio, including several other studios across five countries. This international effort, guided by Grammy-winning engineer Stephen Stewart, creates a sound that is both classical and clean.

Higher Education is a carefully curated journey, with each track featuring a different artist. Creating a dynamic conversation between generations and genres, making the album feel both cohesive and fresh.

The album opens with “Come With Us,” a track from veteran Clinton Fearon. His smooth vocals invite listeners to join the “Funky Binghi Reggae Party,” with a message of peace and unity.

The lead single and title track, “Higher Education,” featured a surprising and brilliant collaboration with New Orleans’ own Ivan Neville. His soulful, R&B-infused vocals blended seamlessly with the reggae sound. The lyrics spoke directly to the album’s mission:

“Higher, Higher, Higher Higher Education / It breaks the chains. Of a bad situation…/ It’s an option for some. Make it free for everyone. Educate future generations.”

The album continues with a powerful moral anchor, “Teach The Youths,” voiced by Sister Nancy. Her delivery lends immense weight to the song’s message about the importance of education for the young. This is followed by a moment of heartfelt gratitude on “Thanks” with rising artist Hector “Roots” Lewis.

The middle of the album is a diverse showcase of talent. Stephen Marley lends his conscious voice to “The Right Path,” a track about morality. The album then shifts into a meditative space with “Dub With Us,” an essential interlude from the legendary Mad Professor. This is the midpoint, where the album breathes, allowing the listener to fully immerse in the sound.

The energy returns with “Long Way Down,” a ska-infused societal critique from Mike Love. Leading into “The Brotherhood,” a track that combines the harmonies of The Tamlins with the raw energy of ska-punk icon Angelo Moore of Fishbone.

The album reaches its peak with “Words of Wisdom,” a track featuring Queen Omega that focuses on the power of speech and the role it holds in building communities. The journey ends with two reflective tracks: “Same Lessons to Learn” from Micah Shemaiah and a final, meditative “Thanks Dub” from Mad Professor, which leaves the listener with a sense of peace and purpose.

Higher Education is a triumph on every level. Its mission elevates it beyond a simple music release, rather transforming it into a cultural moment. The production is flawless, balancing multiple international studio collaborations with an authentic roots reggae feel. The collaborative nature of the album, bringing together both veterans and new talent, is a brilliant success.

For some purists, the blend of international influences—R&B, funk, and punk—might feel like a departure from traditional Jamaican reggae. However, these minor critiques don’t diminish the album’s overall quality, as it stays true to the original mission. Creating great music and supporting an important cause.

In a music world often focused on commercial success, Higher Education proves that reggae remains a powerful force for good. By supporting an institution that has literally shaped reggae’s history, The Naya Rockers have not only produced a brilliant album but have also created a long-lasting legacy. It’s a project that gives listeners a reason to listen, and by listening, they support the future.
