After releasing the first two singles in his three-part series—a cover of Europe’s “Final Countdown” and the original track “Alive or Dead”—multi-disciplinary artist, founder and frontman of Mad Meg, and songwriter Ilya Popenko concludes the project with its final installment, “Every Turn.”
“Every Turn” is a highly collaborative ensemble featuring four vocalists, a piano, and a string quartet, translating to a darkly whimsical musical theater experience.

Popenko’s new single first introduces its vocalists, Jason Laney, Dolly Lewis, Kristy Talorico, and Dan Veksler, before coming together in a “We Are the World” style crescendo. The track delves into a laundry list of self-undermining thoughts in the mind of a neurotic, mostly seen in the opening verses and the bridges.
Popenko’s solo work is lyrically-driven, which defies easy categorization, blending acoustic and electronic elements that are influenced by a wide array of genres, including post-punk, vaudeville, hip-hop, Russian folk, French chanson, alternative pop, and experimental rock.
In 2011, Popenko founded Mad Meg. Distinguished among other bands, Mad Meg dubbed its own genre, “Punk-Crooner-Noir,” as no genre seems to fit its niche. Performing in nearly 30 cities across Eastern Europe, the band has shared the stage with Emir Kusturica, Rasputina, and Nogu Svelo!.
