Upstate New York’s rising band Annie in the Water released their brand new EP Migration on July 18th. The 25-minute, 5-track release features one song written by each member of the band. Migration is the follow up to their 2024 full length LP Things To Do. The band says this record opens up a fresh chapter in their promising upward trajectory, and that the recording process was both a deeply personal and collaborative journey.

Annie in the Water’s current line-up consists of Matt Richards on keys, Michael Lashomb and Bradley Hester on guitars, Chris Meier on bass, and Joshua West on drums. Hester sings lead vocals, while the rest sing backup. The five recorded, mixed and mastered Migration at Capture Studio in Syracuse, NY alongside Jason Randall (Jocko).

“Migration tells the story of us moving through life and music as one, navigating change and growth along the way,” as per the band’s initial EP announcement on social media. Both the song titles and lyrical themes directly reflect that sentiment with messages of positive growth, introspection, and accepting change.
Migration not only navigates through growth and change, but different genres – weaving pop influences with folk, indie, rock, and even R and B. “Tangled Up” has an incredibly chill, laid back vibe that is the perfect introduction to the EP. The latter half of the song builds on this transcendent groove that simply just makes you feel good. The patience and chemistry the band has is already on full display. From the country influenced “Angelfish” and the folk tinged “Wings of the Birds,” Migration stays true to the Americana/indie band’s heart and who they are as songwriters. On “Wing of the Birds,” Hester shares a moving message of rising up, and seeing the light of day. The nuance and vocal delivery on “Wings of Travel” make for some special moments throughout.

Annie in the Water kept these studio takes tight and intentional, leaving room to open these songs up for extended improvisational sections during their live shows.
