This past Sunday, August 10, The Paramount Theater in Huntington welcomed David Lee Roth and his band for a night full of Van Halen classics. After almost five years, the singer returned to the stage with a new band for a new tour this year.

At 8:15 as the lights dimmed on a packed house in Huntington, Diamond Dave and his band took the stage and immediately grabbed the audience’s attention by kicking into “Panama.” With there being no opening band, the night was basically a Roth-era Van Halen greatest hits set, consisting only of Van Halen songs and no solo Roth tunes. That was to no complaint from the audience as they were eager to see the rock icon.

Having been one of rock’s most infamous showmen for over forty years, the 70 year old singer still delivers the charismatic energy he once brought to the stage. Although he isn’t doing splits off of the drum riser anymore, watching him still command an audience by twirling a microphone stand is just as entertaining.

Backing Roth is his new solo band which has the addition of a quintet of backup singers to fill in the harmonies. Guitarist, Al Estrada, also does a solid job of standing in the shoes of the great Eddie Van Halen, which is no easy task.

Roth continues his tour throughout the U.S into the end of the summer, ending on September 14 in California. Tour dates can be found on his website.
