Pantera brought their Heaviest Tour of the Summer to Wantagh Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, delivering an electrifying night of intense energy, supported by Amon Amarth, on July 26.

As the evening unfolded, anticipation filled the air as the audience eagerly awaited the Swedish Vikings’ entrance onto the stage. Amon Amarth delivered an unforgettable performance, marked by a theatrical presence, towering statues that loomed over the stage, and a melodic take on death metal.

Their devoted fanbase was unmistakable, creating a loud atmosphere. They launched their set with “Guardian of Asgard,” a track from their seventh studio album, which immediately engaged the crowd and had them singing along. During “Put Your Back Into The Oar,” the entire stadium joined in, mimicking the rowing motion while chanting “Row, Row, Row,” resulting in an incredibly infectious experience.

As their set drew to a close, they performed “Raise Your Horns,” a Tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne, commanding the fans to raise their horns in solidarity. The sight was truly remarkable. Concluding the song, Vocalist Johan Hegg raised his own horns and celebrated Ozzy’s legacy by downing a beer from his Viking horn, marking a fitting tribute.

As Pantera prepared to take the stage, the audience buzzed with excitement, eagerly anticipating the performance. When the curtain fell, the legendary band launched into “Hellbound,” igniting the stadium with an explosive energy. The performance was nothing short of electrifying.

Zakk Wylde showcased his guitar riff alongside Charlie Benante’s powerful drumming, while Vinnie and Dime’s enduring legacy resonated through the band. Zakk and Charlie poured their hearts out, channeling that energy through their soul and playing in memory of Dime and Vinnie.

Phil Anselmo delivers an impressive performance at his age, and I was particularly struck by his vocal prowess when I saw him live in 2018 with Down and again in 2019 with his hardcore band, Superjoint Ritual. The band delivered an amazing performance, navigating through all the classic hits. The audience was fully engaged throughout the impressive hour and a half set, reveling in every moment and singing along to each song word to word.

The setlist showcased a remarkable display of southern metal, featuring iconic tracks such as “Walk’ and “Cemetery Gates,” which sparked enthusiastic cheers from the audience. The band also honored Ozzy Osbourne during their performance, paying homage to the legendary vocalist while expressing their deep respect and appreciation for his significant impact on the metal genre.

As the night progressed, the energy continued to build, culminating in a breathtaking finale that left the crowd wanting for more. The band delivered their final song with relentless intensity, drenched in sweat, before dropping the microphones and exiting the stage to a thunderous ovation.
