On July 11, The Lumineers played to a nearly sold out stadium for their largest New York show to date, a very impressive turnout for an indie/folk rock band. (Citi Field’s capacity is roughly 41,000.)

It was a hot night in Queens, with only a hint of a breeze blowing through the venue. The band drew a younger crowd, dressed in Americana fashion (cowboy boots and sundresses or flowing skirts), but there were also many parents with children in tow.

The show began with two openers – Hippo Campus, an indie rock band from St. Paul, Minnesota, and Young the Giant, an American rock band from Irvine, California.
Hippo Campus, who just finished their 2025 tour, played an eight-song set, including several songs off of their most recent album, Flood, and a few older fan favorites, such as “Buttercup” and “Way It Goes.”

Young the Giant played nine songs, including “Cough Syrup” and “My Body,” two of their biggest hits, and the debut of “Different Kind of Love.”

The Lumineers took the stage at Citi Field around 9:00pm and played a 28-song set, including eight out of the eleven songs on their latest album, Automatic, released in February 2025. Every member of the audience was given an LED wristband upon entry, so the stadium lit up with different colored lights throughout the show.

The band members, including core members Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion, piano), and touring musicians Stelth Ulvang, Byron Isaacs, Brandon Miller and Lauren Jacobson, are all multi-instrumentalists, and they played a wide variety of instruments during the night, including drums, bass, guitar, keys, violin, accordion and mandolin.

The Mets’ mascot, Mr. Met, joined the band during “Ophelia,” and after attempting to catch a tambourine, promptly tumbled off the stage. He appeared to be unharmed, however he was heavily roasted on social media the next day. Another notable moment was when Stelth Ulvang climbed up a tower on the field with his guitar strapped to his back. Towards the end of the set, they honored Wesley Schultz’s brother, Sam, who tragically passed away unexpectedly in May, with Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” Schultz was wearing a Billy Joel tee shirt throughout the show and appeared a little emotional towards the end of the song.

Together with a sold out show at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on July 3, it must have been a satisfying return for the band, which was formed in New Jersey but moved to Denver over fifteen years ago because they were struggling to find success on the New York music scene. As they noted on their social media pages, they’ve come a long way, “from dive bars to Citi Field.” The Lumineers have solidified themselves as one of the most influential bands today.

The Automatic Tour continues with additional stops throughout the country through October 14, with support from several different bands.
