In Focus: Todd Nelson Trio Plays Jazz On Jay

Todd Nelson is an over half-century veteran of the 518 music scene. From the rock bands Silver Chicken, Units/Fear of Strangers to other collaborations in the following decades, Todd Nelson brings a wealth of musical ideas to his trio, who performed at Jazz on Jay on Thursday, June 19.

Mostly original compositions were performed with his crack band of Kyle Esposito on electric fretless bass and Justin Tracy on drums. The pace and the style of the music played during the 90 minute set could be described as swinging ambiance.

The tempo ranged from an almost non beat oriented mystery of nature (“Sophist Intrigue,” “Space Jelly”) to the syncopated motions (“Dog Dreams,” “Dune Buggy”).

Of note was the Todd Nelson Trio instrumental interpretation of Jim Webb’s classic hit “Wichita Lineman“. The longing of a traveling worker for his love at home. The other cover was of Dave Holland’s ode to forests “Backwoods Song”.

This was a great opportunity to sample the more contemporary version of the improvisational music called jazz.
