Syracuse Venue Owners Faced with Several City Permits Per Show

Ever wondered what it takes to put on a concert? In the City of Syracuse, live music venue owners face requirements of multiple permits including submitting one for every show according to a city ordinance.

On June 6, the city fire marshal visited a downtown venue to inform them of the city’s requirement for permits for every show, on top of the entertainment permits venues already have, according to 443 Social’s website.

The venue, later cited as The Song & Dance, by Syracuse.com, is one of many thriving live music locations in Syracuse. Others include Funk ‘n’ Waffles, 443 Social, CNY Jazz and The Westcott Theater.

According to the 443 Social’s Website, each smaller venue hosts on average 120-265 shows a year. The thousands of required permits will go to the city permit office over the course of a year. The per-show permits that could take days to weeks to approve, may turn touring artists off to the uncertainty, according to the 443 Social’s Website. Each show requires a $15 permit, capping at $150 per year.

The ordinance was recently brought to public attention when, last month, code officials closed the Westcott Theater for multiple days after a disturbance nearby following a show.

“My colleagues and I have banded together and are working to come up with a solution that will give the city what they are looking for without crushing us under the weight of unnecessary paperwork,” the 443 Social’s Website said.
