The Schenectady City Council has sparked spending concerns after a vote pulled city funding from the Bands on Broadway summer concert series.
Bands on Broadway is a new concert series featuring free weekly concerts each Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting June 12 through August 7. This musical event is one of the many featured throughout Schenectady this summer.

But it’s not all fun in the sun for this summer concert series. On May 27, the city council voted 4-2 against a proposal for the city to be involved in the event’s finances. This proposal would have allocated $2,500 in public funds to support Bands on Broadway.
After the proposal was shot down, a local nonprofit stepped in and will now be handling the concert’s finances. Though this decision has brought about controversy for Bands on Broad and brewed concerns over city government stepping away from overseeing how taxpayer money is spent.
Despite the recent drama, the Bands on Broadway summer concert series will be continuing as scheduled.
