New York Women Composers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women composers, is turning the page on a new chapter after the corporation named a new administrative director.
After three years of upholding the position, Mykel Marai Nairne is stepping down as administrative director of New York Women Composers to fully pursue her professional dance career.
“It has been a true honor to support NYWC’s mission over the past three years. Collaborating with so many of you—composers, performers, advocates, and supporters—has been both inspiring and deeply meaningful,” Nairne said.
Nairne will be succeeded by born and raised New Yorker Liza Bautista, who has an extensive background in digital journalism.

“I am thoroughly excited to join New York Women Composers as the Administrative Director. It is a great deal to be able to assist this organization in advocating and representing women in the industry,” Bautista said.
Founded in 1984 by composers Elizabeth Bell, Lucy Coolidge, Ann Callaway and Robert Friou, the organization offers membership to New York State residents who are women composers of serious concert music, as well as musical artists and professionals that champion women composers. The organization promotes the work of women composers through performances, grants and extensive public advocacy.

The organization has initiated and supported a wide range of events throughout its history. Concerts have been held not just across the country, but across the globe; including places such as Russia, Bulgaria, Canada and New Mexico. The organization has also led to several recordings for performers through its grant system.
The organization’s grant system has been recently remodeled and renamed to Seed-Money Grants, which are given to either individuals or ensembles to perform their work in either concert or on recording.
