Tuesday, May 13, marked Alex Amen’s New York debut. The twenty-five year old singer-songwriter brought the first of a string of shows to Brooklyn’s Union Pool on a rainy Tuesday night.

Originally from Texas, this was Alex’s first time playing in New York. The singer joked with the Union Pool audience about the contrast between East Coast and West Coast living, saying, “I wore flip-flops on the subway today”. This was the first stop on a small run of shows running through the end of May.

The show started out with a half hour set from Jackie West. The Brooklyn based singer was accompanied by Dan Knishkowy on guitar. The intimacy of just two guitars and Jackie’s voice filled the room, capturing the attention of the awaiting crowd.
Alex and friends took to the stage at 9PM. Alex was joined by Tommy De Bourbon (Acoustic Guitar/Slide Dobro), Adrien Garner (Acoustic Guitar), and Casey Noonish (Bass). The stage was set with a wooden table that the band sat around. Candles and drinks were also set atop the table creating the feeling that the audience was watching the band rehearsing in their own home.

Alex’s music draws on the sounds of many folk artists of the 60s and 70s such as Jim Croce, John Denver, and America to name a few. The group played an hour and fifteen minute long set of entirely acoustic music with the exception of an electric bass. Alex stated that his first EP would be arriving some time in June.
Shows continue through the Southern U.S and California till the end of May supporting Kacy Hill. Alex was also just announced to play both Evanston Folk Fest in September and ACL Fest in October. Visit Alex’s website for updates on future performances and releases.
