Charlie Nieland

Charlie Nieland is an experienced member of the music industry, having been awarded a Gold Record(UK) For his work on Blondie’s Greatest Hits Sight & Sound, and having achieved a Top 10 Billboard Dance Chart Position with Debbie Harry’s singleTwo Times Blue”. Not only is Nieland a skilled songwriter, he’s also mastered multiple instruments like electric guitar, along with any modern recording technology.

“Drown”, along with the rest of the EP was inspired by the book Hole In The Sky, by Monique Vescia. The novel takes place in 2021 United States after an authoritarian government has taken over. Charlie Nieland reflects this theme, saying the album “depicts a dark world”, telling the story of an America of the present and possible future.

Musically, “Drown” takes on a very dystopian and dark sound, reminiscent of 80’s synth. The melody is haunting with many fascinating and ear-catching electronic effects that add to the futuristic/doomsday vibes. Having been four years since Nieland released his critically acclaimed album “Divisions”, Nieland makes a stunning return with this latest single.

“Nieland approaches such subjects with a musical deftness and sonic poise which may at first belie the poignancy of the message he is sending… he balances shards of guitar noise, beguiling electronica and his imploring vocals”

– Big Takeover Magazine

The “Drown” music video was directed by NYC multimedia artist Hypnodoll, known for their use of psychedelic visuals and fantasy elements. Charlie Nieland describes the video as “Beautiful and deranged”, and a perfect blend between futurism and the present day.

Overall, Charlie Nieland’s new single “Drown” is a moving, reverb-laced exhibition that questions the political climate of the country and its future.
