Shallow Alcove Brings Slumber Party Tour to Song & Dance in Syracuse

For Shallow Alcove, you can go home again.   The folk-rock band, which formed in 2017 during their time as students at Syracuse University, returned to the Salt City on Thursday, April 24 with a performance at Song & Dance.  The show was a part of the band’s “Slumber Party” Tour. Lighthearted and Rocco opened the show.

While Syracuse has remained near and dear to the hearts of Shallow Alcove since their time at Syracuse University ended, it was especially meaningful to singer Grace Krichbaum. Krichbaum was born and raised in the Central New York area, and many of her closest family and friends were in attendance Thursday.  The rest of the band consists of Dan Harris (banjo, guitar, vocals), Peter Groppe (guitar, vocals), Jack Harrington (bass, vocals), and Noah Dardaris (percussion).

Singer-songwriter Rocco opened the evening with a set of solo, acoustic tracks.  The Syracuse University senior sprinkled humor in between songs to energize the early-arriving crowd.

Lighthearted was up next.   The twin-sister duo from Athens, Georgia delivered a 40 minute set of refreshingly beautiful folk tracks.  The sisters sang in perfect unison, layering pristine harmonies that would make bands like Fleet Foxes proud. Their sound clearly captivated those in attendance, as the audience pushed their way closer to the stage early in the set.

From the opening notes of “Heart Shaped Locket”, it was clear Shallow Alcove’s set was going to be something special.  Fans immediately joined in, singing along word for word to the opening number.  Singer Grace Krichbaum couldn’t hide her smile from behind the mic.  “It’s the first song and I already have tears in my eyes”, she remarked with a grin after the song.

Over the next 75 minutes, the band would deliver a set filled with delicate, self-reflective folk-pop music, and the set had no shortage of emotional moments. Krichbaum would dedicate “Music Box” to her grandmother, who was in attendance in the front row. As the song concluded, the singer made her way to the edge of the stage and shared a hug with her grandmother, a moment which was sure to dampen the eyes of many in attendance. Other highlights of the set included the emotional piano ballad “Gnaw” and the high energy, set-closer “We’re All Doomed”.

If you missed their set in Syracuse, you’re in luck. Shallow Alcove will close out the Slumber Party Tour with a performance on May 10th in Brookyln.  Tickets can be purchased here.
