La Luz Lights Up Bug Jar

Seattle’s La Luz came through Rochester on April 11 to a sold out show at Bug Jar.

Shana Cleveland and her band have been through a lot lately. Shana overcame a cancer diagnosis and then wrote an album about it, 2024’s News of the Universe.

Over the course of that coming out, her current band, well, disbanded. Instead of focusing all of her efforts on her solo career, Shana kept La Luz moving forward and put together a new line-up.

La Luz used to be a more traditional surf rock, Dick Dale Type affair, but with more recent efforts, and especially on the new album, Shana has found herself in a psych-pop sweet spot.

The current line-up plays together like they have been around for years. The surf rock vibe is still there of course, but mixed in with some swirls of krautrock along with some shoegaze drone.

With the new chapter in the band’s career, this line-up seems like they will be one of those bands who play a bigger room each time they come around. So do yourself a favor and catch them the next time they come to your town.
