Albany’s The Linda, a performing arts space managed by WAMC, is shutting down and will close in June.
The announcement aired on WAMC during the “Roundtable” on Friday, April 11.

The Linda was first opened in 2002 in a former bank, located across the street from the WAMC Central Avenue studios. The Linda has hosted local, regional and national acts over the past 23 years, offering an intimate environment for live shows of all genres and audiences.
WAMC is not scrapping all live music performance though, as a new project “On the Road” will begin performances across the listening area.
The new live radio series will focus on programs and concerts recorded on-location throughout the Capital Region and Hudson Valley region. The initiative includes a summer partnership with Music Haven Concert Series in Schenectady.
WAMC President and CEO Sarah Gilbert said of the series, “Great storytelling doesn’t only happen in the studio, it happens wherever people chose to gather – on campus, at the diner, in libraries, theaters and green spaces. ‘On the Road’ is our way of honoring that. It reflects our belief that public radio should be a presence in the communities we serve, not just a voice on the dial. By bringing our microphones out into the world, we’re deepening trust, building new relationships, and fulfilling our mission to inform, inspire, and connect.”
Additionally, General Manager of The Linda, Peter Hughes, will serve as producer and director of “On the Road.” Recent pilot events have been successful, leading to the launch of the series and maintaining WAMC’s presence in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley music scenes.
“The response to our pilot events made it clear, our audience is excited to engage with WAMC in person, in their own communities,” said Hughes. “The sold-out crowds and powerful conversations we saw in the Hudson Valley confirmed what we’ve always believed: public radio thrives when it’s rooted in place. ‘On the Road’ lets us show up, listen more closely, and deliver the kind of meaningful, local programming that makes WAMC special.”
