In Focus: Night of Drama with Spencer Sutherland

On his ‘Drama’ tour, Spencer Sutherland stopped at Irving Plaza on Sunday, March 23. Cloe Wilder and Stacey Ryan were his openers for this show. The night was full of theatrics and, of course, drama. From the beginning of the night to the end, everyone was rocking and dancing. Which is not a bad way to end the weekend.

Cloe Wilder is just 18 years old and possesses an ethereal, melodic tone in her music. She opened the night with “Heavyweight Champ,” “House by the Water,” and “I Wanna Be Alone with You.” Throughout her set, you could sense how much she loves to perform and is grateful that she can make this her living. She knows how to command the stage and create a beautiful atmosphere.

Stacey Ryan followed up with her smooth R&B pop vibes. If her name sounds familiar, it might be from the viral post she shared in 2022 of her song “Don’t Text Me When You’re Drunk.” She left a verse open to allow other artists to add their own, which took TikTok by storm. Stacey’s lyrics convey deep emotion, and you feel it when she performs. She makes you feel as if you are in the front row, experiencing her music wherever you are. Toward the end of last year, Island Records dropped her from their label. Stacey has a bright future ahead of her, and it’s the label’s loss, not hers.

At last, the moment came for His Royal Highness. From the moment Spencer stepped onto the stage, he exuded such vibrant and infectious energy that he sustained it throughout the night. He kicked off the evening with “Welcome to The Show,” “Alive,” and “Everyone.” Spencer reminds me of a young Freddie Mercury with his performance and vocal style. He knows how to command a room and capture everyone’s attention. All night long, the audience sang along word for word with Spencer. Even when he slowed the show down to perform “Melanie,” the audience was completely engaged. Spencer kept everyone on their toes; after “Melanie,” he moved to the balcony to perform “Modern Heartbreak.”

By the night’s end, everyone in attendance felt rejuvenated for the week ahead. I encourage you to catch Spencer Sutherland on tour to see for yourself what a great showman he is.
