The New York Philharmonic has announced the return of the “Take a Breath” series during April and May at Mother AME Zion Church and First Baptist Church of Corona.

“Take a Breath”, an initiative from the 2022-23 season aimed to support mental health and wellness through musical performance, consists of four free workshops and a community concert. The workshops are guided by experts from Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider and private employer, and feature performances by musicians of the Philharmonic and cultural partners. Each program, to last approximately 45 minutes, will follow with a 30 minute instrument tryout session led by the New York Philharmonic Teaching Artists.
“This incredible partnership with the New York Philharmonic and Northwell Health will help to enrich the emotional and spiritual needs of our congregation and those in our community,” Reverend Patrick H. Young of First Baptist Church of Corona said. “Especially members of our older community, who are often alone and thrive in programs like this.”

“An Unsung Symphony,” the free community concert, was presented by The Unsung Collective, a Harlem-based music organization devoted to celebrating stories of the Black experience, held on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The performance featured The Unsung Collective and New York Philharmonic musicians, performing Carlos Simon’s “Songs of Separation” and Brahms’ “A German Requiem.”
