In Focus: Umphrey’s McGee Rocks the Cap – January 31

One of the hardest rocking bands in the jam band universe, Umphrey’s McGee – played two rocking nights at The Capitol Theatre over January 31 and February 1.

On Friday night, the Capitol Theatre was packed and ready to rage. The band delivered two incredible sets, featuring mind blowing guitar solos and impressive synchronization amongst all band members. The show included what every good rock show has: shredding guitar solos, amazing lights, and a rocking band. Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss are an impressive guitar duo. When they get close and lock in during a peak, you know it’s going down.

Kris Myers kept the rhythm on drums and was definitely working up a sweat tonight like every show, and boy can he play. The show included a drum solo where Kris really shined. Stasik manned the low end at which he’s masterful at, while Joel Cummins played some intricate parts on keys and Andy Farag’s percussion work adds an interesting touch on a heavy sound.

Umphrey’s McGee has stood the test of time. Having formed in 1997 and been touring heavily, hosting and performing at music festivals, selling out venues all over the county and even a three night run in Iceland. They have a unique and complex sound and while it seems like they’re clumped in the jam band category, their sound is much more heavy rock than some other bands.

Sometimes it seems that bands are a regurgitation of others which came before them, or inspired them. But Umphrey’s McGee is not that; their sound is incredibly particular and their own – their sound, commitment, and artistry is what keeps them and relevant after almost 30 years.

The night concluded with a friendly nod to the jam community with “Jessica” by the Allman Brothers as an encore to close up a truly rocking evening.
