Erika Atkins, Executive Director of Bloomingdale School of Music, prides herself and the school on its devotions to music education and their milestone of consistent investment for future musicians.

“Throughout its 60-year history, Bloomingdale School of Music has prided itself on providing first-class music education to anyone who wants to learn, giving every student the opportunity to thrive in self-discovery, explore their passion and find community through music,” said Atkins.

“As we celebrate our 60 years, we’re thrilled with all we have accomplished and poised to realize the full potential of Bloomingdale, as a leading voice of music experiences and music education in our Upper West Side neighborhood, entire city and beyond.”

The school was founded on foundations of community building and support by church organist David Greer. After high demand, Bloomingdale School of Music quickly became one of the first community music schools to provide free music classes to public school children.

To further support aspiring musicians, Bloomingdale’s Music Access Project was established in 1992, providing free pre-college level music education. Since then, programs such as Performathons and Album for the Young were created to help future generations of musicians to experience similar opportunities.

Music is frequently lost in education, as funding for performing arts continues to be cut and erased in many schools. To combat this, Bloomingdale has awarded over $2.4 million in need-based scholarships, served over 35,000 NYC public school children and presented numerous hours of free community programming – all within the past decade.

Bloomingdale School of Music prides itself in their ability to provide high quality music education through equal opportunities. For more information, visit bsmny.org.
