Albany-based funk band Oobleck released their new single “Purse Candy” on all streaming platforms on Jan. 8. The band has also announced upcoming performances in Albany and Clifton Park.
Oobleck is a five-piece band consisting of members Audrey Van Genechten (trumpet), Scott Vorwald (tenor saxophone), Sam Parker (guitar), Josh Radigan (bass) and Kevin Van Genechten (drums). Formed in 2008, the band has released four albums, the most recent being “Down the Rabbit Hole” in 2024. Carrying musical inspiration from New Orleans, the band brings jazz, funk and analog-fusion galore with their new single.
“Purse Candy” is a radiant, electric saxophone and trumpet exchange accelerated with a traveling bass line and addictive rhythmic groove – the perfect single for a winter get-together and clinking drinks. Vorwald and Van Genechten’s open, vibrant sound pairs together to create a captivating and unique melodic line that is guaranteed to stick with any listener.
Funk is best enjoyed live, and Oobleck has presented multiple opportunities for listeners to catch their performances this year. The band will host a release party with Troy, NY based band The Sugar Hold at Ophelia’s in Albany on Friday, Jan. 10. The Sugar Hold will open the set, followed by Oobleck.
Oobleck will also perform at The Eleven in Albany as part of the bar’s First Friday Happy Hour event on Friday, April 4. Later in the spring, the band is to perform at the SingleCut North tap room at Clifton Park, NY on Saturday, May 10.
