Lifelong New Yorker Paula Tartell has announced her debut single, “Canary” is slated to release on January 8.

Producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Paula Tartell is finally releasing her own music – experimental, punk, energetic, uncut. She’s a lifelong musician: a conservatory-trained pianist converted “synthbug.” Her first love is The Beatles, who taught her from a young age that music transcends genre, drawing influences from a range of pop, electronic, punk, rock, folk, r&b, noise, experimental, and classical genres.

Paula is gearing up for a much-anticipated debut single, “Canary,” slated for release under the project PAULA T on Wednesday, January 8. A former concert pianist, Tartell has been making songs in her bedroom for five years, reluctant until now to share them. “Canary” sings and soars. This high-tempo, drum-driven song blends a kaleidoscope of raw punk energy and experimental bedroom production.

Alongside an energetic live band, Canary features manipulated samples—like bird chirps transformed into synth-like textures—highlighting Tartell’s quirky, intricate production style. With sweet, playful vocals and songwriting, this unrequited-love-song invites vulnerability while exploring PAULA T’s own fears of rejection.

The track is a personal ode to a demoralizing pattern Paula has faced in her life. The pattern of dating men who are afraid to be in love and the vulnerability and anxiety that come along with this dilemma. The song also includes virtuosic performances from Eli Heath (bass guitar, co-producer, mixer), Jake Ford (electric guitar), and Addie Vogt (drums).

With all recycled materials—sustainability as a source of creation and collective liberation—she designed her vibrant canary costume with Nikolai Mishler of YES theater. Poised to establish PAULA T as an artist to watch in the industry, “Canary” will be available on all major streaming platforms on Wednesday, January 8. Don’t miss the chance to be an early listener and get on the bandwagon.

“Canary is my first ever release, an unrequited-love-song about a demoralizing pattern I’ve found myself in: dating men afraid to be in love. To me, the vulnerability of sharing my art is way more terrifying than falling in love will ever feel. I know for some people it’s probably the other way around. The canary represents me and any listeners who put their heart out there over and over again, even if it means hurting or rejection.”
