Antibalas to Close Out Industry City’s Summer Series

Afrobeat band Antibalas is prepared to close out Industry City’s Summer Series this Saturday in their hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Known for their jazz, funk, dub and improvised sounds, this band is modeled after and plays homage to Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band.

Antibalas has been passionate about their Afrobeat rhythms since the late 90’s. Formed by baritone saxophonist Martin Perna, they first performed at St. Nick’s Pub in Harlem for a poetry reading. They have since performed in 35 countries and around New York City, and have been graced by guest visits from Femi Kuti, son of Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, and Seun Kuti, just to name a few.

This band prefers to play in warmer settings, as lower temperatures affects the pitch of horns, making the final Summer Series performance at Industry City a perfect match. Industry City began as a warehouse and manufacturing community in Sunset Park, Brooklyn during the 1890’s. The beautiful waterfront space was recently renovated in 2013, and redeveloped for commerce and entertainment, bringing much needed jobs to the area.

Antibalas will be joined by the High and Mighty Brass Band, bringing a spirited end to summer. Tickets are available at Industry City’s website.
