Taking Meds and California Cousins Embark on Tour, Starting in Brooklyn on Labor Day

Taking Meds and California Cousins kick off their tour in Brooklyn at Sunnydale on Sept. 4. The Rochester bands are hitting up 13 cities in as many nights though the South and Midwest, culminating in a hometown show at Vineyard Community Space on Sept. 16. If you like alternative music tinged with math-rock elements, this is a combo you won’t want to miss.

Taking Meds

Taking Meds started in 2012 when Ben Kotin and Skylar Sarkis started playing around with math-rock inspired riffs and lyrics while on tour with their band Such Gold. This side project has grown, with the addition of Steel Wolf Markson, and Matt Battle rounding out the quartet. Their debut full-length album My Life As A Bro is like a bromance soundtrack, with song titles such as “Comfort In Poor Planning,” “Crash At My Place,” and “County Border Bars.”

California Cousins is an emo/post-hardcore outfit known for their riff-hitting jams. Math-rock influenced twinkly guitar bits and sharp changes in tempo provide a backdrop for heart-felt lyrics sung with layered vocals. The band consists of Jordan Serrano on vocals and bass, Juan Ortiz on drums, Casey Sanders on guitar and Christian Ortiz on guitar and backing vocals. Their music is up on Bandcamp, but the recordings pale in comparison to their live shows. Strap on your seat belts and hold on tight, because it’s a wild ride.
