New Album and Tour Dates from They Might Be Giants

Come Jan. 19, They Might Be Giants will add another album to their already extensive collection of 19 studio albums, six live albums, eight compilation albums, 21 extended plays and 11 singles. If that was exciting enough, they also announced a 2017-18 tour with over 50 stops, four of which are in N.Y.

The first two New York performances are a New Year’s Eve at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn Dec. 30 and 31. They will also have New York shows on April 19 at Anthology in Rochester  and at The Egg in Albany on April 22.  It’s expected that the tour will showcase some songs off their upcoming album I Like Fun. Fans can get a taste of their new material on Spotify and iTunes with their single from the new album titled, “I Left My Body.” It’s more straightforward with a power-pop style which is a bit contrary to some of their hits like ”Birdhouse In Your Soul.” There are still some unmistakable trademark TMBG characteristics, though that can be found in the new track, like quirky lyrics and catchy hooks all wrapped up in a garage band energy.

Fun fact: TMBG told the Rolling Stone that “I Left My Body” was tracked in the same recording studio that hosted their platinum-selling 1990 record, Flood. The studio was reportedly bought out by, “some unlikely owners and the place kind of lost its vibe,” said songwriter and co-founder, Linnell. “But last year our producer Pat Dillett and his partner Steve took over the space, brought it back and in a bunch of ways made it even better.”

Maybe being back in an familiar space will induce some more chart topping hits. John Flansburgh seems to think it will saying, “I know believing a studio has any kind of special power is believing in voodoo, but when the voodoo is working for you, that’s okay!”
