Bug Jar

While it may not be the most obvious destination for avid music lovers, Rochester, New York has melodies pumping through its veins which is only made possible through its unique music venues. One small corner bar in particular stands out among the rest with its inverted living room, iconic rock performances, and most of all its boisterous head-banging community. Located in the heart of the City of Rochester with a history spanning over three decades and a loyal ownership that would do anything to keep it alive: Welcome to The Bug Jar.

The Bug Jar was first opened in 1991 and became a staple of the music community very early on in its run providing a space for Indie bands, local acts, and DJ’s to perform. After being bought by Aaron Gibalski, Bobby Teresa, and Brant Riggs in 1999, the venue has reached new heights, taking quirkiness and the unique as its foundation. This basis has spread not only to the music but the building’s strange style with a pair of giant bugs welcoming visitors as they circle over the bar.

The Bug Jar, like all small music venues, has faced its challenges, however. During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the bar was forced to shut down. As it mainly stayed afloat due to bar sales and performance revenue over the years, the pandemic placed a target on its back threatening its demise. Gibalski solemnly commented that live music in a pandemic is “the last one to go, and the last one to come back.” Fortunately for the owners and the music aficionados, the long time fans and contributors of the venue had their backs as with the GoFundMe “Save The Bug Jar” and Senator Schumer’s aid, the night club was able to prevail.

Now, the venue is back up and running stronger than ever, continuing to give local acts their first chance in the limelight along with welcoming incredibly well known rock performers such as The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, and The White Stripes early in their careers.  Although The Bug Jar is now home to rock, punk-rock, and heavy metal, there is room for everyone here as genres vary, providing a safe place for anyone who wants to take on freedom of expression through music and dance.

Those who thrive on the weird, out of pocket styles, or whoever just wants to take on a new experience, The Bug Jar is the place to go! With Mondays bringing you Manic 80’s Dance Parties and every other day of the week showcasing new and old diverse talent, the small corner bar is a staple of acceptance and good-times to be had.
