Funk ‘n Waffles

Settled in downtown Syracuse, New York, Funk ‘n Waffles has become a staple of the region, a renowned music and food gem that has drawn attention from across the state. Opening its doors in 2007, the restaurant and music venue continues to bring unique cuisine and local artists to the area. Even giving it more of a Syracuse touch, Funk ‘n Waffles was brought to life by two former Syracuse University students, as Orange Nation has fallen in love with the funky, groovy establishment.

First located near Marshall Street next to Syracuse University’s campus, Funk ‘n Waffles has since moved around the city to multiple locations, as an additional restaurant would open in Armory Square in 2014. The current and original owner Adam Gold wanted to give the city a new, intriguing venue for people to enjoy their one-of-a-kind homemade waffles while also experiencing live music. Despite opening in 2007, they wouldn’t receive major national attention until 2013, making an appearance on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri.

The Marshall Street restaurant was forced to close in 2017 due to the construction of The Marshall apartment complex, yet it looked to be a blessing in disguise as the Armory Square business soared in popularity while also saving it. Providing a whole new vibe to Syracuse’s downtown scene, the menu chalked full of enticing waffle combinations sets it far apart from other restaurants in the area.

For music lovers, the large groups of artists and free mic nights the venue holds give it an atmosphere perfect for the younger college students and also local crowds. Countless emerging talents have made their way through Funk ‘n Waffles’ stage, putting together unforgettable rock, bluegrass, country, electronic, and many other genres into performances at the joint.
