Summer at the Plaza Offers Something for Everyone

There is still a ton of free live music left during the summer at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. Summer at the Plaza just saw Reggae Night featuring Freddie McGregor, with special guest Anthem Band on June 28. Summer at the Plaza has ten more shows scheduled between July 4-Sept. 23, featuring live music, including the annual Forth of July fireworks celebration.

July 4, Price Chopper and Market 32 present the Fourth of July fireworks celebration. The event has been a staple at the plaza since 1976. The festivities will kick off at 3:00 p.m., with fireworks starting around 9:15 p.m. The event will see performances by the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band with special guest and platinum recording artist Tonic.

July 12, The Sam Roberts Band, bring its Canadian rock style to the concert series with special guest Rechorduroys. The show starts at 5:00 p.m.

July 15, MVP Healthcare presents kids day at the plaza. There will be many children’s activities on hand including Two By Two Zoo, Touch A Truck, bounce rides, face painting, arts and crafts, balloons and puppet shows. A meet and greet with PJ Masks will be on hand along with a live interactive performance by Pete the Cat.  The event runs from noon-5:00 p.m.

On July 19, Coors Light presents Soul Asylum. Their smash hit “Runaway Train” won a Grammy in 1994 for Best Rock Song. Special guest Cracker will open the show at 5:00pm.

July 26, Coors Light presents soul singer Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires at 5:00 p.m.

August 5, McDonald’s presents the Black Arts and Cultural Festival featuring Jody Watley and Shalamar Reloaded. The festival will feature a kids zone, with several activities, all starting at 2:00 p.m.

August 9, The New York State Food Festival wants you, to allow them to do the cooking for lunch, and dinner, as a wide variety of over 100 food vendors from all over will be on hand. Platinum recording artist The Charlie Daniels Band will provide the entertainment. Festival will start at 11:00 a.m., and run until 9:00 p.m.

Capital Park After Dark will show three different movies starting at 8:00 p.m. August 16 the 1939 classic Key Largo, August 23, the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window, and August 30, Annie.

September 13, Cornerstone presents Jazz Night, featuring Alex Torres. Born in the Bronx, Torres formed a Latin orchestra in Amsterdam in 1980. His Afro-Caribbean mix of salsa, merengue, Cha-cha, bomba, and Latin Jazz have graced several festivals all over the world. Showtime 5:30pm.

September 20, Hot Club of Saratoga performs its style of gypsy swing music during the next installment of Cornerstone’s Jazz Night at 5:30pm.

On September 23, close out the summer and celebrate Latin culture with the Hispanic Heritage Celebration. The event will feature live music, food, dance and family friendly activities starting at 5:00 p.m. and running until 10:00 p.m.
