Nietzsche’s JazzFest Returns for a Second Year

After a successful first year, Nietzsche’s in Buffalo will bring back their JazzFest for a second year. The festival features more than 30 local, regional and national acts.

Nietzsche’s second annual JazzFest returns to Buffalo May 10 to 14. The five day festival features a lineup of acts from across the jazz spectrum, including traditional jazz, swing, gypsy jazz and fusion.

Kicking off the festival on Wednesday, May 10 is Tyler Westcott and Dr. Jazz at 6 p.m., playing a mix of old-time swing and gypsy jazz. Also featured on Wednesday are the John Lehning Quintet, the Mark Filsinger Quintet, Freehand and the Donny Frauenhofer Trio. Music starts at 8 p.m. on Thursday with singer Susan Peters followed by Saranaide. Carina and the Six String Preacher and Anthony Re and the Flat Five round out the night.

Friday’s show starts at 10 p.m. featuring Lost Wax from Rochester and the Acid Cats from Akron, Ohio. The Fredtown Stompers, a dixieland group made up of alumni from Fredonia Music School play between their sets with jazz fusion act The Truth closing out the night.  Saturday see eight acts starting at 8 pm. with Cinnamon Jones kicking off the night of Buffalo-based or Buffalo-native acts. Lindsay Holland, the John Troy Organ Group, Elliot Scozzaro and his quintet, Alex McArthur and her quintet and the Dark Matter trio all perform on Saturday.

Sunday’s program starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. It features some of Buffalo’s most well-known and established acts. The John Bacon Ensemble pays tribute to Thelonious Monk at 2 p.m. followed by What Would Mingus Do? led by Kelly Bucheger. The Jared Tinkham Trio and the Mark Filsinger Eleventet also play Sunday.

The Wednesday and Thursday shows have a $5 cover with the weekend shows at $10. Music goes until 1 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday and Saturday nights both end at 2 a.m.
