A lot of the time our passionate music pursuit will push us to well-embraced limits; whether it is driving hours away to catch a show on a week-night, living on rice cakes to afford a full summer of festivals, or spending days at a time in an unfamiliar city to see the full run. It’s rare and remarkable when our musical adventures take us somewhere tropical… but even music heads need a “real” vacation, sometimes.
This year’s installment of Jungle Jam (JJ) is set to take place March 9-12 on the beaches of downtown Jaco, Costa Rica. Featuring four days of continuous music, the weekend will be home to acts like Slightly Stoopid, Thievery Corporation, Stick Figure, Twiddle, Fortunate Youth, Zach Deputy, Mike Love, Rob Ganza DJ set and many more.
Jungle Jam is an idea that originated seven years ago, after a local benefit show was held at the Hotel Docelunas, featuring Bill Kreutzman, Mike Gordon and Scott Murawski. It has since grown over the years, now bringing the top reggae, rock and jam band touring acts to this unique destination festival from all over the world. Other notable names such as Oteil Burbridge, Ryan Montebleau Band, Dumpstaphunk, Karl Denison’s Tiny Universe, Steel Pulse, Thicker than Thieves, Papadosio, Dopapod and The Werks have been featured on past lineups.
This will be the first year that JJ moves from Hotel Docelunas to the new grounds on Jaco Beach, which promise to offer ample space for fans and performances. Every day the festival will start with live music yoga on the beach, with other opportunities to enjoy the locality like eco tours, sport adventures and excursions, from zip line adventures across the rain forest to boat cruises to see crocodiles. Attendees can also take surfing lessons or a trip to Manuel Antonio National Park.
“We’re very excited to bring Jungle Jam to the beach and downtown Jaco,” said festival producer Eric Freitas in a press release. “Jungle Jam will still have the same high quality production values. We’ll have more room and we will be in the heart of Jaco. The new grounds will be much easier for people to enjoy everything that Jaco offers.”
Music will fill Jaco beginning Thursday March 9 with an intimate artist showcase and traditional Costa Rican barbeque for VIP ticket holders. Main-stage performances run Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Festival passes start at just $175 and include weekend entry to the festival grounds and general camping. VIP packages start at $300 and include exclusive access to select after-hours concerts and other special events along with a variety of perks. Lodging, ground transportation, and meals can all be added on to all VIP packages.
Round-trip flight packages can be as low as $300-400, if you know how to shop around.
